The recent events involving Howard Stern and CBS radio have become a big time deal. Stern made an appearance on Letterman and trashed the head of CBS. The crew over at the Stern show have had some fun at Les expense. However the issue here is not Stern and CBS radio. The issue is how does CBS radio fix the radio division? What has happened is recent rumors of David Lee Roth being fired from the job he currently has and hiring the mortal enemy's of Howard Stern. That;s right, the CBS suits are preparing to bring back Opie and Anthony to the mainstream airwaves.
Yes that Opie and Anthony, the biggest rivals to Stern could come back and actually replace Howard in the morning drive spot. The history of this is very simple, a long time back. Stern signed a deal to end on midnight of the year 2000 and then he planned on retiring from radio. Within that span of time, O and A were hired to do afternoon drive for CBS radio. The duo made a very big impact and did a lot of great material. Once it was rumored that when Stern left they being O and A would then move to mornings and take over for Stern. This did not make Howard at all happy, so he then went to after listening to the group from afternoon drive began to do skits on Stern. Stern instead of attacking them on air, much like he did to others such as Mancow and the legendary feud he had with John De Bella. The King of All Media went to his friends in the CBS radio operations and had a gag order placed on O and A, From censoring content to having certain people not booked on the show of O and A. The behind-the-scenes wrangling of Stern went to the heart of O and A. They became mortal enemy's at this point and began bashing each other on a regular basis's .
O and A did their Sex for Sam III event and were fired by Clear Channel and CBS radio. Everyone from Mancow in Chicago {Who shared the same agent,} along with Stern began to sign on the bandwagon of bashing O and A. The rumor of O and A coming back on CBS surfaced of them signing a deal to come back but they could not poke fun at Howard. They turned down the offer. Then once their deal was up with Clear Channel and their deal of getting paid to do nothing ended, O and A began to take offers from Sirius and XM. The boys chose to go with XM and became the first jocks from Mainstream radio to go to the alternative airwaves. Howard on the other hand began to see issues from the FCC, to the government and Clear Channel attack him and undermine him at every turn. What did Howard do when faced with the option of leaving radio or going some where else? Howard went with checking into Net radio, and once he found out it was impossible to make this work from bandwidth to the power of getting the show out to the public. Howard chose to go with Sirius after his buddy Mel went to their board from CBS broadcasting. Plus, XM had O and A and he did not want to go from bad to worse with that deal. Stern made headlines and went world wide with his end of radio to going to Sat alight.
The rumors of CBS radio going after hiring O and A to come back to Mainstream radio is been a big deal. Considering CBS is in the biz now of going after Howard Stern on every level. What this basically means is if CBS hires O and A, they are fighting sat alight radio with Sat alight radio. They are going and bringing back the arch rivals of Stern who can get numbers. O and A would be able to get back at Howard from several levels. However, the issue here is what do you do with these two if you bring them back to the mainstream airwaves. This is basically the radio version of what many have wanted for Iraq. Bring back Saddam, he controlled Iraq but he was a scum bag leader. So basically you have O and A who could take it Stern and get numbers but they are shock jocks and could be fined by the FCC, so it would be bad to worse on that level.
The positive of Howard Stern;s rivals coming back to the Airwaves. The number one issue here is a quick fix from radio division on CBS. O and A can get numbers and can become a great fix for the David Lee Roth issue. O and A have shown they can get numbers and if given a power of morning drive and the CBS brass behind them to get Stern and get people back on their side of radio, so they can fix the issues at CBS TV and other areas of CBS including the news division,etc. Number two, CBS is I am sure sick of Stern coming out and doing like he did on Letterman with the hate and the t-shirt. So what can they do, hire someone who hates Stern more than Stern hates CBS. O and A could go out and poke fun back at Howard and be motivated by CBS and then CBS can step back and take no responsibility's for O and A.
The negatives of O and A coming back to CBS radio, they left because of Howard and now when CBS is in issues with Stern. They need the 2 guys they did not stand behind. CBS is needing a quick fix and personally people should just say, hey you get out of it on your own. CBS could be fined a lot from what O and A could do, O and A are lose cannons and could take this CBS issue with Stern to a higher level. O and A could expose how much of a scum bag Stern is but they could also expose CBS for being the true scum bags by helping Howard do what he did to O and A.
Finally my point of view is what can CBS do with bringing O and A back, they can make some cash for XM. They can piss off Stern with bringing in rivals of his to fix there problem. Face it, Stern hates CBS and does not like to see they sue him, however he did a lot of build that up and make them a lot of money. Stern does not want to see if fail but it would piss Stern off to the highest height, if CBS chose to fix it with two of his biggest rivals. CBS needs to dig itself out of a whole on their own and need to build a star like Stern built himself. If they give Adam, roth and Rover a chance they can successively and win in the long run. However finally let's look at another option and think about this, someone who CBS already pays to do his job in afternoons in Philly. This man got Stern like heat when he lived in worked in Wichita Kansas. This man is Stern's buddy and O and A's buddy. Kidd Chris, this guy could be the rising star that CBS could help grow but if not they can go with a quick fix or just let the radio division tank.
