The great folks at NBC will be bringing content to the intent. What happened was people in the news media have noticed this place called, Youtube.com is a great place to post video. You Tube has all sorts of things such as recently a comcast tech was caught sleeping and the video was posted on line. NBC has saw this and knows their ratings are in the shitter. They went out and partnered with YouTube.com to place previews of their new fall line up on You Tube.com. The place where people are gathering to see content.
Now why would Youtube.com be such a hot bed for content? Well everything seems to be visual anymore. Back in the day, audio was the in thing but now with You tube and others. The site is catering to the folks at the visual medium level. you tube provides all things such as movie trailers, classic tv and movie clips as well as hidden gems such as old commercials, etc. People have flocked their to see content on line and make their own content. NBC seems that this would be the place to regenerate their dieing audience numbers.
Why this is bad for on line world, The on line world does not want the same old crap, If they did, they would watch NBC and others and not flock on line. Frank Cotolo a good friend of mine recently said, he watches more you tube than he does TV. You basically would not need a TV, they have everything on Youtube.com and you could become an addict really quick. However, this could usher in a new era with people like NBC screwing up content on Youtube.com and driving the people to elsewhere or away from places like Youtube.com
Why is this good for online? Online is going to be the place where the listeners are but once again, Youtube.com will go from a free site to a premium membership place. The site is going to drive away the listeners and viewers. The people on the broadcast side will know that the people online do not want to be charged and any attempt will drive people away from the business model your attempting to set up.
NBC will learn this and many other lessons, also they will learn something that many people from the mainstream world, learn awful quick. There is a backlash there and will be a huge one. People from the mainstream such as Bill o' Reilly do not have many friends online. Then you have Micheal Savage, who has not been greeted very good online. So NBC will find this out soon when they bring their content online to trash up Youtube.com and others.
People like NBC want to come online and bring their content and their players. They do not want the people who have brought the audience or the numbers. They want to bring in their polished pros. For instance, people Cotolo and others have brought numbers to the pod cast arena. However, the major players do not want to embrace cotolo and his crowd. They want to put their own pod casts up and hope that the crowd would embrace them over Cotolo. Guess what, no..What I mean on this is Cotolo built the numbers and then Al Franken wants to come in and grab his numbers. If those numbers wanted Al Franken, they would listen and Cotolo would be no where.
Finally my view on this subject, is NBC and others will come online and try to grab the numbers. However, the membership will not be their cause they will charge and then once NBC and others see no money coming in. They will leave just like all the others have done. Same thing with Sirius making Stern avail online, they want to charge people, However the people do not want to pay for radio, they want free content that is not polished and poised. When they all figure this out, we all will be better off.
