The past columns have focused on what people are doing wrong, let's look at what people are doing right. I have been involved with all forms of radio since 1993 and I have studied radio and done my homework on radio. This week we focus on music radio and what you can do to make music radio a good thing and successful thing. Now I may not be able to show you how to be rich and make billions of dollars but I can show you a smooth running thing.
Prep is the first thing and the most important thing you need to do on this area. Prep is something you do not do. You will have all the issues of the next ideas falling apart. Prep for music radio is anything from reading music realted websites to catching up on current events. Most radio dj's who do music programming have useless drivle that can become a mainstream story. For instance between music on a local station about 2am, The dj mentioned something about Wikipeida reported that Sinbad was dead. When he really was not, so basically what happened was this became a national story.
Content and downloads are a must for any music dj, most of the time you can subscribe to the latest music source such as TM century. There are all kinds of night club dj services and they can get you the latest hot music to play. When a DJ mentions something like, here is a hot new track. Most of the time he just did not download it off the net. He just got it in the mail off one of those sites. You can download music such as remixes and mash-ups from places like Lime wire or Bear share. However you take the risk when pc virus's and also forms of entertainment not playing or being the wrong format or the wrong stuff.
Ideas and interviews are another source of music and entertainment. You can have one local bands and play a music cd of theres. They can promote their appearance and you can also get something out of the way for an air shift. Another option is to have some local celebs on or if someone who is a big name is coming to your city to play an event. Try to pin them down for an interview, such as a local classic rock station was interviewing comedy master George Carlin one morning before his appearance in town that evening for a show.
Get bands involved I mentioned that earlier but it can be a great resource. The bands are a ratings winner by getting them on and having them do the promotions angle. Another idea that a lot of dj's do is they have entire blocks of music devoted to bands. This kills two birds with one stone, they get their music played and you get cheap programming. Another idea is to go out and find local bars to sponsor the bands and the segments. Get the club dj's and area people from clubs involved in promoting the bands themselves.
Pod casts and replays is another method you can be prepared to be a success. Everyone is pod casting these days from Rush to Stern to Jim Rome. The little and big guys do it all the time. The folks who have made it big time have made pod casting a huge success and most have gone from pod casting to the big time. For instance the folks over at Talkshowamerica.com went from net radio to being picked up by a major radio outfit.
My take on what it takes to be successful music dj is a lot of things from pod casting to being prepared to being prepared for interviews. To being ready for anything and everything, and i believe that if you do your homework, you can become a very successful radio dj or you can always go into right wing talk radio and be Glen Beck.
