Last night I had other commitments with work, so I did not attend the Box-A-Buddy event in Hutchinson Kansas. I did not make the lovely trip to Hutchinson Kansas. I have a vast different look at Box-A-Buddy since I moved to Salina. I may anger a lot of the “fighting” public with some of my takes this week. However, I as usual could care less. The show that took place in Hutch on Saturday was vastly different than I fought a few months back.
The biggest issue is that last night from all the reports that I have heard, Mike Edwards the guy who promotes this let a bouncer in the bar and a local guy fight without headgear and protective equipment. What happens next is the local guy can sue Edwards and McGraws and own the damn bar. For one every time that Edwards makes gains and begins to get Box_A-Buddy off the ground. He screws it up by doing odd crap. Either he promotes an event than cancels it without notice. He promotes a fight and it does not come off or he does like he did last evening. He lets a match go without headgear. I for one have not been a fan or headgear and most people I know do not. However, we are not Tyson or Royce Gracie and headgear is a must. Now if this was to leak to the media, imagine what kind of BS there would be. MMA in Kansas is growing and it would be stomped out like a weed.
The next thing is a personal gripe of mine, from a promoters and co-promoters perspective. Booking fights is hard and for one, booking shows is a huge problem when you have nothing but unskilled thugs to work with. I have booked tons of fights and 90% of the time the card comes off great but it looks nothing like it did on paper. Either people do not show up or they are big talkers in the bar but when it comes time to throw down. They are no where to be found and wear away like a cheap excuse.
Another issue and that is fighting bouts in general. For instance, last evening a buddy of mine fought against another buddy of mine. Both men had fought before and both men came into the match much like they did the first time. Talked a lot of smack to their inner circle at the bars and other places. Talked a whole lot of crap on Myspace.com and then when it finally came down to it. Neither man came in shape and each did their best with what they had. The fight came out totally different than the first one. Hopefully after this, they will both just shut up and go onto other challenges in their lives.
Finally the scene of Box-A-Buddy itself, I am sure it will make Edwards and the bar lots of money. Everyone got to show off some local pride and local stuff. However, what was gained by last night. No scores were settled because everyone will have excuses Monday morning. People did not perform to the expectations other people had for them. The only thing I can say is the fighters who did well, good job. The one's that did, should have put the Stevewiser down and trained more, The one;s that did not show up, please shut up and go away so there is more room for us.
