Weekly Rant: The Youth Vote?
The last few weeks we have not filed a column for the Weekly Rant based on me just being too damn busy However we are back with something that I have been bitching and complaining about every time there is a election cycle. The youth vote, now every year someone try s to mobilize the youth vote. They try to get something going every year and every year it fails and it fails miserably. The first year it was I believe the election of Gore/Bush when the term became more part of the lexicon than it had been. Now the term has been around since the 1930's however not till the election that saw Gore go down to the hands and courts of W.
The youth that year was nailed with things like the Internet and MTV and other venues like Nickelodeon and others trying to get the youth to vote. Now they could care less who they were voting for and who they would declare for weather it's Dem or Rep. Everyone wanted this to be the hip and happening thing. That year I voted but not because of the people on MTV told me to and Vince had Smack down your vote and guess what at the end of the election when all the fuss had died down. They found out that the youth vote stayed home and smoked the hippie lettuce and played PS2, they did not vote. They had the issue of 2 white guys who pretty much said the same thing and either way they would not change the world for the youth of America.
The next cycle of Bush/Kerry once again tried to grab the attention of the youth. Puff Daddy came out and said “Vote or Die”. This time around the folks at the think tanks and people on MTV wanted to topple Bush and wanted to get the youth to do it. Guess what, the youth once again had a new game system and better tree to smoke so guess what they all stayed home and Bush won the election then this war got kicked into high gear. The youth began to have lives that they thought sucked and someone mentioned that if they vote they could get some changes going in the world of red and blue, right vs. left.
This time around with the cluster fuck of an election we currently have, going on. The folks at MTV and others could care less about the youth and guess what with all the folks leaving them alone and telling them they do not need an education....Wait that's a song and I said it wrong. However point being here is that the youth now wants to vote and they are motivated to make some real change. You have youth thinking, F these white guys and let's elect a woman and then you have the other side thinking let's get a black guy in and they are lining up for someone they think looks and acts like them. Plus you have the Rep. On the other side getting youth involved cause they like the values of Rep. But guess what they want someone like Ron Paul and McCain to go in and restore the Rep. Values and get W out of the White House.
My point here is you have kids not wanting their buddy's to go over seas and die for no reason or what they believe to be no reason. They network on Face book and My space and they all have cameras and when they are not catching their teachers running wild and getting cops in trouble they are making blogs and videos on why the world sucks. They also do not have “The Man” telling them to vote, so they can sit back and say I like Obama cause he is black and I like Snoop Dogg or they say Clinton did well with Bill, so if we elect Hill we get Slick Willie. So they are tuning and turning out on this issue. Now your telling me that if this works and it is found the youth worked. Then we will all scare them off next time with pressuring them into the broadcast of their vote.
Finally whatever you like or think, we all have finally gotten the youth vote to put down the glow sticks and come out of the tent and stop listening to Prodigy. They have put down the WII and the tree and now they are coming out and voting. So let's hope they make an impact on this election, actually they already have.
